JD CYMRU PREMIER: BARRY TOWN UNITED 3 CONNAH’S QUAY NOMADS 2
Two goals from 18-year old substitute Ieuan Owen gave Barry the three points at home to last year’s Welsh Cup winners, Connah’s Quay Nomads.
Town’s 88th minute winner was the third time that Barry took the lead in a match that see-sawed between the two clubs.
The result leaves Barry in fifth place in the JD Cymru Premier, despite having to make three changes during the game due to on-field injuries, losing top scorer Ollie Hulbert, Elliot Reynolds and Ben Margetson.
Barry had the game’s first chance when Robbie Willmott curled a free-kick over the wall, but Nomads keeper George Ratcliffe dived to his right to save.
Town took the lead after 23 minutes. Sam Snaith was twice involved in the build-up, chipping his pass over the top of the defence to early substitute, Kayne McLaggon, who fired past Ratcliffe into the bottom corner.
Barry nearly made it 2-0 soon after the break, Josh Beecher and Keenan Patten setting up Michael George, only for the defender’s shot to cannon off the post.
Nomads levelled just before the hour, when a low cross from Declan Poole was netted by Rhys Hughes at the far post.
After 66 minutes, McLaggon’s shot from the edge of the box was comfortably saved by Ratcliffe, but Barry took the lead again after 74 minutes, when McLaggon laid the ball back for Ryan Kavanagh and his effort was turned in by recently introduced substitute, Owen, finding space in the six-yard box.
Rhys Hughes scored his second of the game for the Nomads with an unstoppable free-kick from 25 yards, but Barry got the winner with two minutes left on the clock.
Playing out of defence, McLaggon slotted the ball through to Owen, who rode challenges from two defenders before slotting past Ratcliffe for the match-winner.
Barry have no match this weekend, traveling away to sixth placed Caernarfon Town on Saturday, 23rd November.
