Barry Town consolidated their Top Six position with a 2-1 win away at Flint last Saturday, writes Ian Johnson.
Two first half goals put Barry in the driving seat, before conceding a controversial goal in which manager Steve Jenkins was sent to the stand as he protested the decision.
Flint had the opening chance of the game, with Florian Yonsian looking to chip Barry ‘keeper, Luc Rees, the ball bouncing off the top of the crossbar.
But it was Barry who took the lead in the 21st minute. Robbie Willmott’s corner from the right was headed in by defender Josh Yorwerth, his first goal for Barry since signing in the Summer.
Barry made it 2-0 eight minutes later. Evan Press made space through the middle before passing to Ollie Hulbert. Hulbert threaded through to Sam Snaith, who scored with his second attempt, somehow heading over Jack Flint in the home goal after his first shot was deflected up into the air.
At the other end, Josh Jones had two good chances to score, with Luc Rees forced into a full length dive to his right to stop a header.
Barry almost made it three just before half-time, with Callum Sainty’s shot hitting the underside of the bar and being cleared.
After an hour, Flint pulled a goal back in bizarre circumstances. Josh Yorwerth was fouled and took the free-kick quickly. Jonsian stepped into the ball’s path, diverting it to Elliott Reeves who lobbed Rees from thirty yards.
While Barry players and management protested, the goal was allowed to stand, with Jenkins sent from the bench.
Despite this, the home side’s attempts for an equaliser were in vain, with Rees making important saves at his front post from Jonsian, and diving low to his right to save from Reeves, securing Barry’s three points.
Barry face league champions The New Saints at Jenner Park on Saturday, kicking off at the earlier time of 1pm.
