Barry Town reached the semi-final of the Nathaniel MG Cup on Tuesday night, beating Cymru Premier league leaders, Penybont at Jenner Park.

Two goals from Ollie Hulbert and a winner from Kayne McLaggon secured Barry’s place in the final four of the competition.

Responding to the weekend’s Welsh Cup defeat, Barry put out a strong side in the league cup, but found themselves on the back foot when conceding an early goal.

In just the fourth minute, the visitors took the lead, a cross from the left being headed in by Gabriel Kircough at the far post.

Kircough almost scored again after 25 minutes, his header coming off the bar before being ushered away to safety, and Barry ‘keeper Luc Rees had to save from close range.

Barry levelled after 33 minutes when the ball fell to Ollie Hulbert within the box, and he lashed his shot from close range past Mike Lewis, the former Barry ‘keeper in the Penybont goal.

The home side took the lead ten minutes later when a Harrison Bright cross from the left was headed downwards by Hulbert, and Lewis wasn’t able to keep the ball out of the net.

Barry came close to scoring a third before the break, but some desperate defending kept them out.

The second half was a nervy affair as Barry looked to extend their lead and consolidate at the same time.

Ieuan Owen broke free from the defence but saw Lewis save his effort, while Keenan Patten headed wide a minute later.

Eventually, Penybont levelled the match at 2-2 after 78 minutes. Kane Owen’s low pass picked out James Crole, and the former Cardiff City striker made no mistake.

Barry bounced back immediately, taking the lead again after 81 minutes, with Hulbert’s cross picking out McLaggon, who calmly netted past Lewis with the match-winner.

In the league, Barry travel to Flint this Saturday, before hosting The New Saints on November 2, Kick-off 1pm.
