JD CYMRU PREMIER: BARRY TOWN UNITED 3 BRITON FERRY LLANSAWEL 1
Barry Town were 3-1 winners over recently promoted Briton Ferry at Jenner Park last Saturday, winning their third home league game of the season, writes Ian Johnson.
The home side took a tenth minute lead. Keenan Patten received a pass from Josh Beecher on the left touchline, cut inside, taking the ball to the edge of the box before letting fly with a low right footed shot to beat the keeper.
Unfortunately, it was short-lasting as, two minutes later, a mis-placed pass from Barry goalkeeper, Luc Rees, went straight to Ferry striker, Ellis Sase, who netted for the visitors.
The game was dominated by Barry, who created many first half opportunities before finally getting a second goal.
On one occasion, Ollie Hulbert fired low to beat the keeper at his front post, but the shot was saved.
On the next, Hulbert ran onto a long ball, but lifted the ball over both the ‘keeper and the goal, while a third effort from the Barry striker was blocked by a defender.
Barry took a 2-1 lead into the break, though, when Eliot Richards’s shot from the edge of the box looped over the visiting defence into the top corner.
The home side made it 3-1 in the 55th minute. Patten forced his way through the defence and then cut back for Hulbert to net from inside a crowded six yard box, scoring his seventh league goal of the season.
Ferry started to come back into the game, but couldn’t score. An effort from substitute Luke Bowen went straight to Rees in the Barry goal, and a Jasper Payne goal was disallowed for handball in the build-up.
Barry could also have scored a fourth, Patten releasing Kayne McLaggon, but his shot coming back off the post.
In the Welsh Cup this Saturday, Barry kick-off against Cymru South club, Caerau Ely at 2pm, and then face Penybont in the MG Cup Quarter-Final next Tuesday, 22nd October.
