A programme to teach Barry kids how to box is currently in the works.
A former international featherweight champion has joined forces with the Vale’s MP Kanishka Narayan and with South Wales Police to help roll out the ambitious programme.
Barry born Lee Selby is a retired Welsh former professional boxing world champion who competed from 2008 to 2022.
He held the IBF featherweight title from 2015 to 2018, and previously the British, Commonwealth, and European featherweight titles between 2011 and 2014.His new campaign intends to find a suitable site, funding support and volunteers to provide a home for Barry’s kids to learn boxing.
Lee’s vision for Barry is to show how boxing and mentoring can support children growing up in the area. He said: “I want to use all my platform and skills to give back to Barry, so that kids growing up here have the best start in life.
“I hope we will get as much support from the community as possible to make my vision a reality.”The Vale’s MP Kanishka Narayan said: “Lee put Barry on the global stage as a boxer. I am proud to back him now, as he brings his global talent back to Barry’s benefit.
“Knocking doors for the last 18 months, I heard again and again our community’s shared hope for better opportunity for kids growing up in Barry. Together, we will do everything we can to turn that hope into reality.”
