A teenager from Barry has received the Child of Wales ‘Young Leader’ award.

Soffia Kelly, aged 17, has overcome many challenges in her personal life, however it’s her inspiring story that led to her receiving the ‘Young Leader’ award.

When Soffia was younger, she was ostracised at school for her love of football. She started football aged five at grassroots level within the boys’ game as part of her twin brother’s team.

As she got older, she continued to hone her skills and was eventually invited to trial for the girls’ Wales South performance centre in 2017, aged 10. She was accepted; however, another obstacle fell in Soffia’s path when her mum Soraya was diagnosed with cancer.

Soraya’s cancer diagnosis meant she couldn't commit to training and so Soffia’s dream was put on pause.

Instead, she refocused her energy and started making educational videos along with her brother on the early detection of cancer.

With Soraya’s health improving Soffia once again had more time for her passion and in March 2021, Soffia was invited to trials and secured her place in the new Elite Football Welsh Academy South regional squad.

Since then, her career in sports has skyrocketed Soffia received her first international Welsh cap at 14 and has participated in numerous international camps, including the recent Women’s European Championship qualifiers.

Her achievements on the field are recognised in the sports community and she participated in a powerful documentary for CBBC and a BBC initiative to educate children about bullying.

Soraya said the following about her daughter’s journey: “She’s inspirational both on and off the field because she hasn’t given up, she’s so resilient and she uses her platform to help make a difference to other women and girls.

“It was horrendous for me as a mother to not be invited to parties and she was just out in the garden kicking a ball on her own.”

Soraya continued: “At just 17 she’s amazing I’m so, so, proud of her-she is a real inspiration."

The award ceremony took place Friday September 27th at Swansea Arena. The star-studded event recognised Soffia’s talents and saw many other inspirational young people gain recognition for their achievements.
