Barry Town United lost out to The New Saints on the weekend.
Despite a spirited display in Oswestry, Barry Town United were defeated 4-0 by The New Saints (TNS), the reigning league champions.
TNS, who boast a full-time squad, were always expected to have the upper hand, but Barry held their own for much of the game.
Barry came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute, with Ollie Hulbert’s shot narrowly missing the target.
A minute later, Barry’s goalkeeper, Luc Rees, who was standing in for the injured Liam Armstrong, saved a powerful shot from Adam Wilson.
The home side took the lead in the 25th minute, with Jordan Williams netting from close range after a save from Rees.
Barry thought they had equalised in the 50th minute, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
TNS doubled their lead shortly after, with Wilson scoring from a low cross.
The game could have taken a different turn in the 64th minute when Hulbert’s cross hit a defender’s arm, but the officials did not award a penalty, much to Barry’s frustration.
Substitute Ieuan Owen also had a goal disallowed for offside with eight minutes remaining.
TNS then showcased their professionalism, scoring twice in two minutes.
In the 84th minute, Ben Clarke scored after another effort was blocked.
A minute later, Clarke’s shot was cleared off the line by Josh Yorwerth, but only as far as Williams, who netted his second and the Saints’ fourth.
Barry Town United will host Caernarfon Town in the Cymru Premier on Saturday, September 23, with kick-off at 2.30pm.
