Barry Town were beaten 1-0 away from home on the Ceredigion coast, conceding a first half goal to Aberystwyth Town.

Missing two strikers due to injury and illness, new signing Ieuan Owen made his debut for the club, the 18-year old signing from Cymru South side, Afan Lido, during the week.

Barry started the game brightly, with most of the possession in Aber’s half but failing to cut through the defence.

The best of these chances fell to Mike George in the 24th minute, his curling left-footed shot beating the goalkeeper but coming off the bar.

Minutes later, George set up Drew Perrett, whose shot went over the bar.

Aberystwyth took the lead in the 33rd minute. A corner from the right wasn’t defended by Barry and an unmarked Jonny Evans fired home from eight yards at the back post.

Barry nearly equalised before the break. From the left, Robbie Willmott’s cross saw Ollie Hulbert get in front of his marker, but his header was pushed away by Aber goalkeeper, Dave Jones.

Just after the hour, Aber had two chances to double their lead – but Evans fired over the bar with a speculative volley and then saw Barry ‘keeper Liam Armstrong save his one-on-one chance as he homed in on goal.

Barry increased the pressure as the game went on, but to no avail.

Owen tried a cheeky chip of the ‘keeper with a volley, while Dave Jones saved an Ollie Hulbert shot off the line from a corner, in what would have been a repeat of Aber’s earlier goal.

From the edge of the box, Evan Press saw his shot go wide, while Barry’s second new signing of the week, Harrison Bright, last year of Newport County, came on as substitute and had his shot saved by Jones at the near post.

A frustrating defeat for Barry, who face Flint at Jenner Park on Saturday, kicking off at 2.30pm.
