Barry Town took a first minute lead at home on Bank Holiday Monday, but ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 score line against Newtown.

The home side dominated the game territorially and in terms of chances, but a goal in each half from Aaron Williams gave the three points to the visitors.

It took less than 30 seconds for Barry to get in front, with Keenan Patten chasing down the Newtown defence, benefiting from the rub of the green and then slotting the ball past ‘keeper, Alex Swindell.

Newtown equalised after 10 minutes. Attacking down the right, Aaron Williams fired a first time volley from the edge of the box which went in low in the bottom corner.

Patten nearly scored a second after 35 minutes. Ieuan Owen found himself in space on the right and his low cross was met by Patten at the far post, but went into the side netting.

Minutes later, good interplay in the Barry midfield saw Hulbert shoot from just inside the box, but saved by Swindell.

Newtown scored their winner five minutes into the second half. A throw-in down the right was dinked into the middle by Jason Oswell where Williams headed past Barry ‘keeper, Liam Armstrong.

From now on, the search was for a Barry equaliser.

Ieuan Owen’s 51st minute shot went across the face of goal, while another effort from Owen was saved at the near post.

After 72 minutes, Barry were awarded a penalty for a push in the back on Hulbert, but his penalty was sent low to the keeper’s left and saved.

Barry kept on coming, but the goal didn’t.

A Rhys Schwank volley from the edge of the box was pushed around the post by Newtown Man of the Match, Swindell, who also saved well to his right to stop Patten from scoring once again.

Barry are at home to newly promoted Flint Town United on Saturday, 2.30pm.
