BARRY TOWN UNITED 5 CARDIFF CITY U21 3 - Report by Ian Johnson
BARRY Town fans saw a midweek eight-goal pre-season friendly as Cardiff City under-21s provided the opposition at Jenner Park on Tuesday.
Despite continuing to introduce new faces and experiment with changes, Barry’s goalscorers were familiar figures, with two each from Oli Hulbert and Kayne McLaggon, and Callum Sainty also finding the net.
Most of the goals came in the second half after Barry went in one goal ahead at half-time, following a competitive first half.
Captain Evan Press saw his fourth minute shot go over the bar, while an effort from new signing Ryan Schwank was tipped away.
Barry finally took the lead with a 42nd minute opener, Oli Hulbert’s fierce drive at the front post being deflected in off a visiting defender.
Cardiff almost equalised before the break, but Barry goalkeeper Luc Rees pulled off a close range save.
Following a series of second half substitutions, the game came to life around the hour mark.
Firstly, Cardiff City equalised with a back post header, but that only sparked Barry into life.
A free kick from Aiden Lewis on the Barry left was headed in by defender Callum Sainty to make it 2-1.
Barry scored again a minute later as Oli Hulbert bagged his second goal of the game, netting at the second attempt after the ‘keeper pulled off a low save from his initial shot.
City then pulled back to make it 3-2 with a curling shot from the edge of the box.
Second half Barry substitute Kayne McLaggon then scored twice in the final ten minutes to make it 5-2.
The first came from the penalty spot, with McLaggon scoring after a trip on Mike George, and his second was a cheeky lob of the visitors’ goalkeeper, caught off his line.
A late consolation for Cardiff made the final score 5-3.
Barry face Newport County’s first team on Saturday at Jenner Park, the game kicking off at 2:30pm.
