BARRY'S crumbling town centre is finally to be refurbished, when the first phase of redevelopment starts next month.
The Town Hall, in King Square, is set to be fixed up in preparation for the scheme costing over £1 million.
A contractor has been selected to carry out this initial work before the second phase begins next year.
The re-development includes creating a library complex on the site, re-designing the tatty King Square and returning Central Park to its former glory.
Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Jeff James, said: "This is good news for everyone in Barry and the Vale.
Unlike other years when money was set aside for this project only to be unspent, this year work will start on the building, and the budget for 2003/2004 will be spent.
"The people of Barry and the Vale will be able to see that we mean business.
"They can look forward to an on-going commitment to funding, which will deliver the Town Hall in a condition to be proud of, a central library to marvel at, and a Central Park restored to its former glory.
"This has been a long time coming, but it was a promise I made to the people of the Vale that this scheme would be delivered, and I am determined to see it completed."
Pyke Street resident, Kim Jackson, 24, has lived in Barry all her life.
She said: "I've got fond memories of coming to the library in the hall every week when I was in school.
With four children, it's a bit of a trek going down to the Leisure Centre.
It's not just about the services; It's also about time they worked on the building.
It's good news they're starting the work, even though it's taken so long."
