The worst blizzards in 15 years hit Barry on Saturday night, when 16 inches of snow fell and was whipped into high drifts by 70mph winds.

A big police operation was mounted with the main object of saving and protecting lives at the height of the blizzard, a spokesman at South Wales Police headquarters, at Bridgend, told the News.

The Barry Centre of the British Red Cross Society held its annual cadet presentations at Gibbonsdown Jubilee Community Hall on Friday week.

Mrs Beatrice Morgan, who lives at 46 College Road, Barry, retired from her post as organist at Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church, Barry, at the end of December 1977, after 33 years continuous service to the church in that capacity.
