CONCERN has been voiced by Penarth residents living within the range of a new mobile telephone mast.

The structure was erected a few weeks ago on the Golden Lion pub in Glebe Street.

This area is a densely populated residential part of Penarth and many residents are concerned about radiation given out by the mast.

Franchesca Wr- ight lives opposite the mast and is nine months pregnant.

She said: "I am surprised that the mast can be put in such a prominent place with so many people living near it."

She added: "I have spoken to the company Hutchinson 3G and they have explained that the mast gives out a lot less radiation than a microwave.

"But I am still worried about the affect this would have on my baby."

Landlord of the Golden Lion, Gary Hanson-Brown, said: "I don't want the mast there. But I do not own the pub. I am a tenant for Punch Pubs."

A spokesman for Punch Pub Company (PPC) said: "PPC is perfectly satisfied that the installation adheres to all the necessary safety standards and poses no health risk.

"We would not have proceeded with the agreement had there been any doubt."

A petition has been opened by local residents and more than 50 people have signed it to register their disapproval.

Hutchinson 3G own the mast.

Spokesman Mike Dobson said: "We have completed all the relevant checks to make sure the area is suitable.

"There are various guidelines which we as a company have to follow."

He added: "We have advised the nearby school Albert Road about the mast.

"The output of this mast is 600 times less than the limit allowed by Gover- nment guidelines."

An information line has been set up to address concerns.
