CAMPAIGNING Port Road residents are preparing once again to fight plans over the controversial airport access road.

As traffic to Vale of Glamorgan-based Cardiff International Airport increases, people along the busy stretch are concerned their properties will once again be at risk from plans to widen the road.

They successfully fought off plans to change the highway seven years ago and are now look set to campaign again.

Financial adviser Suzanne Campbell and her veterinarian husband John, 58, headed the strong pressure group that was formed in the mid-90s.

Suzanne told the News: "We were told by people involved in the last struggle that, despite laying out good reasons against the plan to John Smith, it still looks like the MP wants it to go ahead.

"There is pressure for a better access road to Cardiff International Airport. Housing developments in Barry and the retail park at Culverhouse Cross results in congestion already."

Suzanne and John are concerned that plans, scrapped by the last Conservative government, are being resurrected by New Labour.

Suzanne added: "In 1995, plans were drawn up and a survey carried out.

The next stage would have been to double Port Road through Wenvoe, Barry and to the airport.

Many people could lose their homes if the road is widened. We won then and we will fight again to save our homes."

A spokesman for John Smith said: "John Smith is in favour of improving the infrastructure into the Vale of Glamorgan.

Traffic congestion at Culverhouse Cross is a problem, but dualling Port Road is the best option.

We have a working port, rail links and we are on the doorstep of our capital city.

The only thing holding Barry back is our access roads.

While Mr Smith has sympathy for residents along Port Road, the whole of the Vale will benefit."
