OUR CHARITY, Greyhounds in Need, is currently supporting, with veterinary and food costs, approximately 130 rescued galgos (Spanish greyhounds) at home and abroad, who will eventually find loving homes.
This is the worst time of the year for the galgo: the end of the hunting season, when many thousands are abandoned or hung. We estimate 1,000 in the city of Madrid alone.
Every day is more heart-rending: messages, pleas, letters and emails rack up from volunteers in Spain, begging us for immediate help before it is too late to pull the greyhounds off the streets and out of the hideous killing stations where hundreds are herded together in freezing conditions, often starved of food and water, some with untreated wounds and illnesses, facing a slow agonising death.
It is heart-breaking for those in Spain who see them, unable to help.
They look to us in desperation. Can you help? Please telephone Beverley on 01446 796368 (Greyhounds in Need Charity 1069438).
