BARRY Comprehensive's talented gym team desperately need vital funds to help them compete in a major competition.

The group of nine boys, who already have a string of prizes under their belts, are taking on the World Gymnastrada in Portugal this July.

But they need £10,500 to help them realise their dream.

Team coach Emma Thompson said: "There are eleven people going on the trip, including two adults. We need to raise £7,000 for the Gymnastrada, plus another £3,500 so we can enter competitions leading to the big one."

Outstripping the Olympics in gymnastic popularity, the World Gymnastrada is expected to attract more than 22,000 people.

The British team is made up of 850 people, with just two schools taking part - Barry Comprehensive being the only one from Wales.

Emma, a Welsh teacher, said: " We are always looking for donations.

"We have received donations from British Gas, and raffle prizes from local businesses, as well as huge support from the school.

She added: "Every fortnight there's a car boot sale on a Sunday in the gym between 9am and 1pm. Hopefully this week we'll have a car wash at the same time.

"So far we've only raised £3,500. But there is no other option. These lads are so good and have worked so hard, they will be going. But we need all the help we can get."
