50 YEARS AGO EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of March 19, 1953:

The Barry Air Training Corps Band paraded at Aberdare on Saturday, to help the local squadron on their Primrose Day.

Miss Norma Valerie Card, of 19 Broad Street, Barry, successfully completed a six week training course on Friday, at Northolt Airport, and is now a fully qualified air stewardess with British European Airways.

Mr Phillip Davies, of Quarella Street, Cadoxton, has been chosen as a reserve for the Coronation Parade in London, on Coronation Day.

The choir of the Cadoxton Moors OAP No 5 Branch gave a concert at the Gwalia Hotel on Thursday. The choir leader was Mr D Miles, and Mr Reynolds was compere.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution awarded Miss Lilian Dally of Porthkerry Road, Barry with its statuette of a lifeboatman when the Lifeboat Honours for Wales were recently announced.

The Vale Council has bent to strong pressure from conservationists and local residents and reversed a plan that, they claimed would have spoiled a large part of Porthkerry Country Park by putting a road through a 300 year old unspoiled nature reserve.

At the weekly meeting of the Cadoxton Darby and Joan Club, Mrs Barbara Harris, their resident pianist gave a glowing account of a visit to Cwmbran when she attended a Chinese New Year celebration.

After two unavoidable postponements, Mr and Mrs Alan Price presented their latest programme of music and slides to the Barry Music Club.

The Barry lifeboat was launched on Monday evening in winds gusting up to Force 8 to tow the motor vessel "Mary Gurine" into Cardiff Docks after a rope had fouled its propeller.
