The latest season of ‘A special school’ will air next week.

The show follows the journeys of pupils at Ysgol Y Deri a state-of-the-art additional learning needs school based in Penarth.

The award-winning school caters for pupils with a range of disabilities.

It provides education for children aged 3 to 19 and recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary earlier this month on November 14th.

The newest season of ‘A Special School’ is due to air on BBC 1 Wales at 20:00pm December 2nd.

He said: “So it was 5 years ago we opened the doors to the media, and it was hugely well received so we made series 2 a couple of years ago.

This time with some of the pupils we’ll see the world of work, we’ll see Wales’s best postman, and we’re going to take a group to Paris, so what could go wrong?”

The BBC synopsis for the show reads ‘Fun, laughter and achievement. Every child is celebrated at Ysgol y Deri, Penarth - Britain's biggest special education school.’

Sensory room at Ysgol Y DeriSensory room at Ysgol Y Deri (Image: NQ) The school has pupils with a variety of additional needs including autism, social, motion, mental health, various medical syndromes and rare conditions such as duchenne's muscular dystrophy.

When the school first opened back in 2014 it took on a total of 200 pupils. Now, it caters for the needs of 600 pupils. 

To cope with this the growth the school is expanding and a new site called Ysgol Llyn Derw that is being built Cosmeston.

A new Sixth Form is being built in order to free up space at the Penarth site.

Construction of the new site has been stalled after construction company ISG entered administration however, staff are aiming to have the school open by September next year.
