A Medical centre in Barry is no longer carrying out in person appointment bookings.

Waterfront Medical Centre has adopted a new virtual booking service called ‘AskMyGp.’

The online service is designed to help patients book online GP appointments, view appointment results, request repeat prescriptions and view their medical records.

In an online statement the surgery said: “The Waterfront Medical Centre are pleased to announce as from Tuesday 19th November 2024 a new service called AskMyGp will be available to our Patients.

“Patients will no longer be able to book appointments at the front desk from 8.30am as this new online service now means that you can request GP appointments, Results, Acute Medication and Medical Certificates via the AskMyGp service on the surgery website from 8am.”

Some think it’s good idea and others aren’t convinced and have raised concerns surrounding older individuals’ abilities to adapt to the new service.

One user wrote: “I think these GP surgeries need to go back to the phone or call in to make an appointment. They all have totally useless automated systems requiring an app. They forget older persons do not have the technical equipment, and as for the rest of us we need two phones...one to make and receive calls, the other for all these hapless apps.”

Another said: “This does seem to isolate those who aren't very technically inclined (whether elderly or just don't have the knowledge/access to the internet even). Hopefully there is still an alternative way for those patients to access appointments.”

It’s about time our surgery did this! Especially for those who struggle with phone calls and people! I’ve emailed them numerous times requesting an appointment and it’s always phone the surgery! Therefore, I can never make appointments or see a gp.”
