The Vale of Glamorgan Council has addressed delays to the construction of a school in Penarth.

Construction at the Ysgol Llyn Derw development was halted last month after construction company ISG entered into administration.

The company entered into administration on Friday, September 20, and following this announcement, all of ISG’s UK operations ceased to trade with immediate effect, with no further work to be undertaken on existing UK contracts.

The night before the official announcement many contractors at the Penarth site had been downing tools and leaving site due to lack of payments made by ISG.The construction site The construction site (Image: NQ) At a recent council meeting for the Learning and Culture Scrutiny Committee, it was revealed that replacement contractors have now been found  to restart construction.

The council outlined that new construction framework is planned to be brought into effect by November 1.

The current state of the site is as follows:

• Steel frame 85% completed.

• Installation of perimeter scaffolding and metal decking to first floor

• Completion of ground floor and first floor slab pours

• Topsoil screened and installed to grass pitch

• Drainage completed to S278 works within site boundary

“The team are working at pace to agree contract terms with the replacement contractor before the 31st of October 2024, otherwise further delays will be incurred as the project will have to be reassessed under the new SEWSCAP 4 Framework and may have to be retendered – estimated delays if this occurred are approximately 4 months.”

The project is an extension of the successful Ysgol Y Deri school, which featured in the BBC documentary titled ‘A Special School'.

Development plans for the latest project includes a £20 million facility which is over two storeys.
