With the weather getting more chillier outside we can’t help but think back to the summer months.

Not that we had much of a summer this year!  No, we are thinking back to proper scorching summers like the summer of 1976.

The famous summer heatwave of 1976 is still burned into many Barry locals minds.Barry Island beach in the summer time Barry Island beach in the summer time (Image: NQ) Here’s what Barry locals can remember about that summer…

One online user said: “In 1976 I was 11, I had huge blisters the size of ping pong balls over my shoulders due to sunburn, suncream wasn't even thought about then and you could cook an egg on the hot pavement.”

Another said: “Oh the sunburn of 76. I still wince lol.”

One wrote: “We found out someone in the area was on kidney dialysis, so our water didn't get cut off.”

Another said: “If you lived on Cardiff Road near Biglis Brigde, you were lucky has as you were on the same feed as Sully Hospital and your water wasn't cut off.”

This user wrote: “76, the year of my O levels, revising out the back garden with my feet in a bucket of cold water!”

This user said: “I remember, going home and sitting under the open stairs on tiles as that was coolest part of house.”Melting ice cream image Melting Ice cream image

The heatwave of 1976 reached its peak between June 23rd and July 7th with the maximum temperature high recorded being a sizzling 35.9 degrees.

The summer of 1976 saw many droughts occur and the implementation of water rationing. It was one of the driest summers in the 20th century.
