A group of friends and locals from the Barry community have managed to raise more than £4,000 for breast cancer awareness month.

Rhian Robson 54, and her friends decided to organise a fundraiser following friend Lisa’s McAloon’s ongoing treatment for breast cancer and the death of their other friend Emma Evans from Sully.

The group were emotionally spurred on to do something in Emma’s memory after she died battling against breast cancer.Emma Evans Emma Evans (Image: Rhian Robson) Rhian said: “I lost my friend Emma, and she passed away in August so after her death I got on the WhatsApp group and it was a case of right girls, we’ve got to do something what are we doing.”

The group organised a ‘graze and grape’ night at local bar view 62. Rhian said: “It was absolutely amazing we had a huge amount over 40 raffle prizes all from the Barry community.

“People were able to name their table in honour of a woman or a friend that they’ve lost to breast cancer or are fighting breast cancer.”

Rhian continued: “What was more powerful about the day is that there were women there who were being treated from breast cancer, a few in remission, and those we knew who’d we’d lost.”

“It was a reminder that so many people are affected by cancer in one way or another and I was proud to be able to offer the space for the organisation to run the event.”

The chosen charity was Breast Cancer Now.
