A non-profit charity from Barry aimed at providing mental health support was nominated as a finalist at the Mental Health and Wellbeing Wales Awards 2024.
Barry mental health group ‘CUBE Community United Barry 4 Everyone’ received a nomination for the ‘Inspirational Charity Organisation’ award.
The event which took place at the Mercure Hotel in Cardiff yesterday (Wednesday 9th October) saw around 300 attendees and featured former professional boxer Frank Bruno as the headline speaker.
Chief executive of CUBE Tammi Owen spoke about the awards ceremony. Tammi said: “For us, it was important to talk to other organisations and spreading the awareness around mental health as there’s still pockets of communities who don’t really talk about mental health.“For us to be a finalist and be nominated we were able to share our information with different people that we are here and if anybody wants to access our support and all our support is free.”
CUBE located on Broad Street offers free of charge 1-1 support, group support, and family support sessions as part of a scheme called ‘side by side.’ The group works with both children and adults.
The event itself was held a day before world mental health day 2024 (Thursday 10th October) and highlights the impact mental health has on individuals.Tammi said the following about world mental health day: “We all struggle with mental health from time to time and it doesn’t mean that we can’t live a fulfilled life.
“It’s really important for everybody that is feeling they are struggling to reach out and talk to somebody.”
Tammi explained how transformative CUBE has been, she said: “Every single person in CUBE has lived in experience so that means all our staff even our coffee shop staff have had struggles around mental health.
“We had two members of staff who came to us and who dropped out of but since working in CUBE it’s built up their confidence and one has built up their confidence and gone back to university to finish their education.”
Event Organiser and CEO of The Ajuda Foundation Dawn Evans said “Once again, this event has demonstrated the excellent services and provision we have here in Wales to support mental health and wellbeing, and the amazing people who go above and beyond the call of duty every day to make sure that people are getting what they need when they need it.
I'm delighted that so many people were able to come and join in with this event, which has now become a welcome fixture in the mental health calendar.”
