The Vale of Glamorgan Council has approved a number of planning applications for the Barry area.

These applications were approved in the week between September 23 and 29.

Work to trees in Penmark Conservation Area

The council approved the removal of two trees - an Ash and a Mountain Maple - from the rear garden of Palmers Cottage, Barren Hill, Penmark, due to them being described as 'unsightly and having no aesthetic value'. Conditions stipulate that a professional tree surgeon must handle the work, following best tree surgery practices.

There are concerns about birch die-back and a severe fungal infection in the trees.

Proposed single storey side extension

Planning permission has been granted for a single-storey side extension at 19, Suran Y Gog, Barry, which also includes associated external works and a raised patio area.

The extension must match the existing dwelling in terms of materials and design.

Specific conditions include the installation of a Starling nest box, which must be retained as long as the development exists, and a privacy screen for the patio.

Part retrospective application to convert garage to living room, loft conversion with erection of a dormer

Permission has been granted retrospectively to convert a garage into a living room, create a loft conversion with a rear roof dormer and re-roof the main dwelling at 25 Gelyn Y Cler, Barry.

The development must be carried out using materials matching those of the existing dwelling (with an exception for the roof tiles and hanging tiles to dormer) and be completed within six months of the approval date.

The council also stipulates the installation of RSPB Cabin nesting boxes, to be retained while the development remains existent.

Replacement of rotten decking area

Approval was given for the replacement of a rotten decking area at 18, York Place, Barry, with a new structure at the same height using the existing supports attached to the property.

A 6ft panel screen will be added to the garden's decking to minimise line of sight.

Full completion of the enhancement measures set forth in email correspondence dated June 4, 2024, must be carried out before the development is put to use.

Additionally, a privacy screen must be installed along one side of the balcony, facing 19, York Place, which must be maintained for the lifetime of the development.
