A new standard presented by the Barry Royal British Legion was laid last Friday, September 6th, at All Saints Church Barry. The event was oversaw by Parade Marshall Kelvin Mulligan.
The service was attended by Deputy Lord lieutenant for Barry area Colin Jones along with other dignitaries, standard from the Royal British Legion were in attendance along with standard bearers from other associations.
Other attendees included: The RAFA Association of Barry and Vale, the 3728TC air training Corp standard, Dr Jonathan Hicks, MP for the Vale, Kanishka Narayan, and Deputy Mayor of Barry Town Council Dennis Clark.
The Service was conducted by Reverend Zoe King and Chris Seaton the honorary Chaplin for the Royal British Legion in Barry.
Mulligan, 69, from Ebbw Vale is a former member of the Welsh Guards First Battalion and fought for his country during the troubles in Ireland and underwent a tour of Cyprus. In total he completed 6 years of service.
When asked about the service he said: “It was a great honour to be asked to participate in such a moving ceremony and to see youth cadets heavily involved and also participants of the Barry Branch of the Royal British Legion namely Mr Roy Goodwin.”
Many hymns were sung, and a brass band concert took place afterwards. A Second World War book of remembrance which Doctor Jonathan Hicks Compiled was also presented at the event.
Theresa Goodwin an attendee commented on the event: “It was a lovely evening.”
