The Barry Dock and Penarth volunteer lifeboat crews recently visited The Royal Mint Experience in Llantrisant to celebrate the launch of a special 200th-anniversary coin for the RNLI.

The launch was held as part of The Royal Mint's ‘Big Summer Fun Day,’ where the public enjoyed a range of activities and learned more about the RNLI’s lifesaving work.

At the event, RNLI volunteer crews shared stories from their rescue missions and highlighted key water safety messages, including the ‘Float to Live’ campaign.

The coin itself is a 50p coin, which features the RNLI flag and is surrounded by a bright orange lifebuoy ring. RNLI volunteers were the first to strike this very special coin.

‘This partnership not only helps to celebrate our history but also provides vital support for our lifesaving work. The Royal Mint’s generous contribution from the proceeds will help us continue to save lives and keep our communities safe on the coast.’

Paul Brandwood, The Royal Mint Experience Sales, and Marketing Manager said: ‘We are delighted to support the RNLI in celebrating their 200th anniversary with the launch of this special 50p coin. The RNLI’s dedication to saving lives at sea is truly inspiring, and we are proud to contribute to their vital work through our partnership.’

‘By displaying over 100 years of RNLI coin collection boxes and giving our guests the opportunity to strike their own RNLI 50p, we hope to raise awareness of the charity’s incredible history and provide meaningful support to their lifesaving mission.’

The Uncirculated coin will be exclusively available to strike on a tour at The Royal Mint Experience until Monday 30 September 2024.

The RNLI was founded in 1824 and has since saved over 146,000 lives at sea. A total of 9,192 lifeboat crews were launched last year by the RNLI saving 355 lives.
