PRESENTER Wynne Evans dropped by Barry Island on Friday, August 30, as part of his BBC Wales Summer Radio Tour.
The former ‘Go Compare man’ and Celebrity MasterChef winner entertained a large crowd just outside of Marco’s Café.
The tour began last bank holiday on Monday, August 26, in Llandudno and has since then moved down the Welsh Coast stopping at Aberystwyth, Tenby, Aberavon, and now finally its last stop, Barry.
Wynne kicked off the event by greeting locals and visitors on the island who gathered to take videos and pictures with him. After some smiles and handshakes, he then introduced his show. The main question on todays show being ‘Have you ever got locked in or locked out?’
The simple yet entertaining question led to many different accounts from people who had experienced either getting locked out or locked in. Wynne himself was inspired to ask this question after he was locked in his own bedroom the morning before the show. Apparently, he was locked in so bad he had to climb out the room window down a ladder!
He said: “I’ve woken up this morning tried to open by bedroom door, and I’m locked in my bedroom -I’ve got a show in Barry Island this morning.”
“So, I’ve had to ring my son who is famous for deep sleeping, to get ladders to the window- help!”
This experience set the tone for the rest and the show!
One Locked out tale was a local one. Wynne interviewed Dave Brown Barry RNLI member Dave Brown he said: “We’ve had a bit of a catastrophe this morning we cannot get into our lifeguard headquarters, or our visitor centre, because one of the clever lifeguards took the keys home with him.
“So, we cannot raise money for the RNLI at the moment.”
Jane Caswell from Pentyoch also spoke to Wynne about getting locked out.
“I was speaking about being locked out of the house, and we’ve got a front door that you have to lock it by pulling the handle out and turning the key. Well, I didn’t turn the key, but I pulled the handle out by mistake slammed the door behind me.”
“We’ve got a cat whose very inquisitive-and he was jumping up and playing with the keys and he managed to turn the key in the lock, and we were locked out.”
Jane holds fond memories of Wynne whose humour got her through a difficult time.
“The last time I spoke to Wynne on the radio a couple of years ago I developed a severe heart arrythmia after it after I came off air and it meant that I got my heart surgery brought forward.
“So, the moral is as Wynne said was if you want to get your heart surgery brought forward come and speak to me on the radio.”
Cathy and John Frost both from Barry tune into Wynne’s show regularly.
John said: “We’ve got a caravan in West Wales, and she always listens to him on the radio. We’ll be driving around, and she’ll have him on in the background.”
Cathy said: “He accompanies us everywhere”
Wynne also made sure to speak to local Barry legends Marco Zeraschi of Marco’s Café and Claire Whalley of Barry Island Gin’s and Spirits Co. He questioned Marco about the BBC Comedy ‘Gavin and Stacey’ and, was impressed with Claire Whalley’s new limited-edition ‘Gavin and Stacey Gin’ available now at her shop.
The presenter with his endless energy even ‘slid’ into action at one point with a young fan down an inflatable bouncy castle slide next to the BBC Radio Wales tent. Wynne in good spirit laughed off a tumble he took and carried on entertaining his devoted fans.
Wynne is at a very exciting time in his career, he is set to appear on Hit BBC One show Strictly come dancing this Autumn on September 14th and production is also currently underway for a show he is presenting with none other than renowned in Barry Joanna Page. The Show is called ‘Lost at Sea’ and explores different areas along the Welsh Coast.
Wynne had the following to say: “Strictly’s goanna be amazing really looking forward to it, I start training on Monday actually so I’m very excited about that, so the first show is September the 14th and keep voting, keep voting to keep the Welsh boy in.
“All at Sea with Joanna Page is coming out in January we’re gonna sail around the Welsh Coastline and enjoy everything in fact, our first stop is Barry Island.
“Today’s been brilliant its always great to get out and meet everybody that listens to the show put some faces behind the listeners and they ring in and you recognise the names so it’s really lovely-so many good bit’s about today probably my favourite part was falling down the slide.”
