BARRY Port is set for a major transformation becoming a ‘clean growth hub’ spanning over 100 acres.

Associated British Ports (ABP) and px Group have announced a major new initiative to develop the site.

The project aims to create a state-of-the-art facility where businesses focused on low-carbon technologies can thrive.

The hub, spanning over 100 acres, is specifically designed for companies involved in cutting-edge industries such as battery materials, rare earth metal processing, and green energy manufacturing.

The Clean Growth Hub is a key part of the South Wales Industrial Cluster’s plan to support the region's transition to a low-carbon economy.

ABP and px Group are seeking businesses interested in joining this innovative venture.

The hub will provide shared infrastructure and expertise, enabling companies to collaborate and benefit from a supportive environment as they work toward sustainable growth.

ABP’s Port of Barry is already equipped with significant low-carbon infrastructure, including a 5 MW solar array.

The port is also exploring the potential for further renewable energy projects, such as expanding solar and wind power capacity.

Additionally, ABP is working with Hynamics, a subsidiary of the EDF Group, to develop low-carbon hydrogen production and distribution at the port, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions in local industries.

Henrik Pedersen, CEO of ABP, highlighted the importance of ports in the UK’s green energy transition.

“This development ensures that Barry will play a greater role in delivering a lower-carbon future,” said Mr Pedersen.

“Our vision is for ABP’s ports to be green hubs, bringing together progressive companies that can benefit from collective infrastructure and expertise.”

Geoff Holmes, CEO of px Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership.

“We have a shared, transformational vision for ABP’s Port of Barry, built on spacious brownfield land ready for development.

“Our successful partnership at Saltend has demonstrated the potential for significant investment and growth, and we look forward to bringing that same energy to Barry.”

The new Clean Growth Hub will be managed by px Group, which has a track record of attracting substantial investment at Saltend Chemicals Park.

A webinar for interested businesses is scheduled for September 4, 2024, where more information will be shared.
