A group of dedicated individuals from the Tŷ Hafan care team are set to take on the 25-kilometre '25k for 25 Years' challenge next month.

The ambitious event was planned by the care team in celebration of Tŷ Hafan’s 25th anniversary.

The '25k for 25 years' walk is scheduled for September 8 and involves 30 members of Tŷ Hafan’s clinical and community care teams walking from Cardiff’s Roath Park to the charity's hospice in Sully, via Bute Park, Cardiff Bay and Penarth.

The team is aiming to raise £10,000 which would fund a specially adapted vehicle to allow the children and young people under Tŷ Hafan's care greater access to community activities and outings.

Deputy lead nurse Meg Fears, one of the event organisers, said: "A fundamental part of our role is supporting children and young people to have the best quality of life and make precious memories.

"Our ambition is to raise money to get a new adapted vehicle to take children and young people out on trips and have access to different opportunities within the community."

Co-organiser Kat Morris, a registered nurse, added: "This is such a significant cause for us as a hospice team as we feel that the importance of making memories in what can be the hardest of times is absolutely essential.

"Being able to put money towards the cost of a new fully adapted vehicle will give resident children the opportunity to be able to do these things, we have seen the impact that trips out can bring, be it a little walk on the beach or going to a farm - these small moments bring some fun to what these children are facing every day."

Claire Horrex, community fundraising manager, said: "Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short.

"At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated.

"Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own."
