THE first permanent wood fire sauna in the county has been set up in Barry.

The town is at the forefront of ‘hot and cold treatment’ as well as having a business that provides a wonderful, healthy and relaxing experiencing.

Môr A Sawna is a wood fired sauna seating up to 10 people permanently situated at Jackson's Bay.

The sauna has been set up by Kath Donovan and now the people of Barry can enjoy the exhilarating experience of sitting in a sauna before nipping out and jumping into the sea, getting that hot/cold sensation!

Or you could just sit in the sauna and look at the stunning views across Jackson’s Bay.

Ms Donovan has stuck out her neck and chased her dreams after setting up the sauna all off her own back, with, she wanted to add, huge support from Barry Yacht Club.

“I've been a sea swimmer for years and 18 months ago I got into contrast therapy (hot cold therapy),” said Ms Donovan, “but to enjoy this I was having to travel further and further from the Vale. This is why I wanted to set up this sauna here.”

The sauna isn’t just for Ms Donovan, but for everyone, with sessions able to be booked coming in at £10pp for 55 minutes.

Ms Donovan also went into detail about the support she got in setting up the sauna.

“This is private land owned by ABP authority (Associated British Ports) and with their help, as well as massive support from the yacht club, I have managed to set up the business.”

Môr A Sawna is open all year round on the stunning Jackson’s Bay and is a perfect addition to what has to be one of Barry’s best beaches.

The sandy beach, cliff tops, lush vegetation and stunning views across the Bristol Channel all combine to make Môr A Sawna a must to try – we did on the exceptionally hot Thursday, July 18 (the first of the two days of summer we’re getting this year…) and let me tell you, when the sun’s out, Barbados doesn’t anything on Barry.

Ms Donovan, along with friends Katy, Kate, Simon, and Hannah, who all joined us, discussed how hot and cold therapy helps them, energising them, making them feel calm and combating the sometimes crippling effects of anxiety.

“There’s a lot of health benefits to hot and cold therapy,” said Ms Donovan. “It’s a holistic approach that is relaxing, and great for your muscles.”
