WELSH water have explained what happened after the curious case of the hole that suddenly appeared in the middle of a road in Barry

At around 5pm yesterday, Thursday July 18, a hole appeared in the middle of the road on Broad Street just outside the Wetherspoons

At the time, South Wales Police sent officers to assist traffic while it was managed.

Welsh Water have now explained what happened, saying it's down to a collapse on the sewer.

A spokesperson for Welsh Water said: "We have identified a collapse on our sewer in Broad Street and our crews are on site carrying out further investigations.

"We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank people for bearing with us while this essential work is done."

Vale Council out of hours operatives attended the scene last night to make the area safe.

There are still reports that the area is affected with congestion in the area today, Friday, July 19.
