REMEMBER the Barry paperboy who saved a pensioner while doing his rounds? Well he’s been honoured by a huge European employers’ associations.
When 14-year-old Harley Nixon-Phillips was on his delivery round along Jenner Road in February, he noticed something strange at one of his customer’s doors – the papers hadn’t been collected.
Harley, of Whitmore High, notified One Stop on Park Crescent, which supplies his papers.
Manager Jackie Wells called the police and when they couldn’t help, Harley and Ms Wells knocked on a neighbour’s doors and eventually got hold of the customer’s brother, who lives in Penarth.
When he came across to Barry, he was said to be shocked at the state he found his sibling in, stuck in his bed, unable to move, and said to be delirious.
Now, Harley has been honoured with a Special Hero award from ‘the Fed’ (Federation of Independent Retailers), a not-for-profit organisation with more than 10,000 members throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Harley was originally nominated by store owner Jackie Wells of One Stop – Selleys in Barry for Employee of the Year at the exclusive 2024 Fed Awards.
However, upon reading Harley’s story about how he heroically saved the life of a pensioner who had not retrieved his papers from his letterbox, in one of his last acts as national president, Muntazir Dipoti agreed a Special Hero award was the best way to acknowledge Harley’s heroics.
Harley was presented the award by Muntazir Dipoti as the official last award of the night and received a standing ovation from the 400+ crowd in attendance, made up of fellow retailers and suppliers.
The glittering ceremony was hosted by renowned impressionist, comedian and satirist Rory Bremner at the Hilton Metropole Hotel in Birmingham on June 18.
Award winner Harley said: “I am absolutely buzzing, it’s wicked, it is a national event as well, it's lovely to be here, I love it. It is a once in a lifetime moment.”
Harley’s father, who attended alongside Harley added: “Being his father I am absolutely overwhelmed, it was such a nice event and his presentation, being left until last, the standing ovation, I was over the moon, it made it even more special.”
