A Cardiff hospice has celebrated its 40th birthday - and appointed a new vice chairwoman.

City Hospice announced during its anniversary celebration that Baroness Ilora Finlay of Llandaff would become its vice president.

The baroness brings a wealth of knowledge as a medical professional and a celebrated fellow at Velindre Cancer Centre.

With years of experience as an honorary professor of palliative medicine at Cardiff University, Baroness Finlay will serve as the hospice's ambassador.

Baroness Finlay said: "To be appointed vice president of this amazing charity is an honour.

"City Hospice makes a significant difference to the lives of so many in Cardiff, providing specialist palliative care and continued support to patients and families in what can be the most difficult period in their lives.

"I look forward to raising awareness of the charity’s work in my new role."

The charity hosted a celebration at the Senedd on June 4, attended by hospice team members, ambassadors, and longtime volunteers.

The event was sponsored by Jenny Rathbone, Cardiff Central MS, who praised the new vice-president.

Ms Rathbone said: "Baroness Finlay will be a fantastic ambassador to help City Hospice take forward its pioneering work in the decades ahead."

The event was hosted by ambassador Sian Lloyd and featured speeches from several contributors including hospice chief executive Liz Booyse.

The charity, established in 1984, has continued to develop and expand its services to cater to the needs of patients, their families, and the wider community.

City Hospice has seen a steep increase in demand for its services.

Back in 1997, it received a total of 100 referrals for specialist palliative care, but today the hospice receives more than 100 referrals each month.

The team remains resolute in its aim to continue to provide vital support to those in need.

Ms Booyse said: "We are delighted to welcome Baroness Finlay as our new vice president.

"Her expertise and experience in palliative medicine enables her to fully understand the value of our work in the capital and the importance of being able to continue to deliver this care for the next 40 years.

"Our ruby anniversary event, held at the Senedd, was a great opportunity to introduce Baroness Finlay to our team and supporters as we joined together to celebrate 40 years of caring for Cardiff and reflect on what we have achieved throughout the years.

"It was a fantastic afternoon, and we thank Jenny Rathbone MS for sponsoring the event."
