A 'human library' event will take place in Barry later this month.

The event is part of the Great Get Together, taking place at the Barry War Museum & Heritage Centre on June 22.

The nationwide gathering is organised in memory of the late Jo Cox MP.

The event aims to celebrate all that unites our communities, inspired by Jo Cox's belief that we have more in common than that which divides us.

Senior citizens will be on hand to share their memories and bridge the generation gap by telling stories about the war years they lived through.

Youngsters will also have the chance to dress up with the Museum's wardrobe of play costumes.

Other activities include learning about Barry's war years, railway, and dock heritage.

In the past, the museum's 'human library' events have seen residents share stories of heroism and unity.

For example, one anecdote told of an uncle who was awarded a medal for rescuing the Greek Royal Family from German forces.

Another described how locals prevented American Military Police from segregating Black GI servicemen.

John Buxton, chairperson of the Barry War Museum & Heritage Centre, said: "We can take for granted the freedom and liberties we enjoy here in Wales.

"By bringing together the different generations we can create greater understanding of different generations' views as well as celebrate how we have more in common."

The museum, located at Barry Island Station, is home to enriching historical displays and educational programmes.

It features an original Second World War Anderson shelter, a 1940s kitchen, and a First World War trench.

Every exhibit is brought to life by volunteer reenactors who tell tales from the Home Front and the armed services.
