ONLINE banking and a fall in visits are the reasons given for a Barry bank branch being closed.
Halifax at 91 Holton Road is set to close on Monday, March 18.
Banking giant Halifax say the reason for the closure is due to more customers doing their banking online.
In a ‘Closing Branch Review’ produced by the bank, they presented data which showed a significant drop in both transactions at the bank in branch and out the cashpoint.
Halifax say between July 2018 and July 2023, branch transactions were down 52 per cent while cash machine transactions were down 27 per cent at their branch on Holton Road.
The bank say only 159 customers used the branch regularly in the12 months to July 2023.
It’s a worrying trend of bank closures in the Vale.
At the beginning of February, Lloyds closed their branch in Llantwit Major on Boverton Road.
On the closure of Barry’s branch, Halifax said: “The world is becoming more digital than ever before and more of our customers are doing their everyday banking online.
“With more customers banking digitally, we've seen a fall in branch visits. Because of this, we've decided to close this branch.”
What provisions are in place for Halifax customers after bank closure in Barry?
Customers of the Halifax on Holton Road have two options.
Head to their nearest alternative bank - Queens Arcade, Working Street, Cardiff, some 7.7miles away, or they can meet up every few weeks with Halifax’s “community banker”.
Community Bankers provide banking services and account support for customers who may not have a local branch.
They have dedicated space in a community venue or Banking Hub where you can pop in for a chat and get help with your banking needs.
The community banker can help with payments and transfers, card and PIN services, managing accounts, and help with online and mobile banking.
