Barry block of flats left in ruin after latest flooding

The flooding at Ty Ffynnon on Ramsey Road was reported on Friday, February 9, with videos on social media showing puddles of water at the top and bottom floors of the stairwell.

One pregnant mother living at the block, Beth Tyler, said she has been trying to get Vale of Glamorgan Council to fix “major health and safety issues” there for years.

A video posted by Ms Tyler on Facebook showing the aftermath of the flooding incident shows a puddle of water at the bottom of the block and rubbish like crisp packets, a tin can and packet of tobacco strewn on the floor.

There was another flooding incident at the property in January, which the council said was caused by Ms Tyler placing a heavy log in a storage cupboard which dislodged a water pipe and led to a leak.

The council visited Ty Fynnon last week after the latest flooding incident took place, but they will need to re-visit it to carry out clean up work and repairs.

Other issues at Ty Ffynnon included in Ms Tyler’s video include markings on the wall in the stairwell, a saucepan containing food left on a window sill in the public area and a public waste disposal area overflowing with bin bags.

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: “More recently, there was flooding to communal areas caused by a blockage in the block’s rainwater drainage system.

“Clean up work and repairs will be carried out in communal areas affected.

“The repairs team attended to the blockage but the layout of the system, which features internal drainage pipes, rather than draining into guttering and downpipes on the outside of the building, needs to be redesigned.

“It will be necessary to reroof the block as part of this work. In the meantime, our Technical Team are looking at temporary solutions to minimise risks of future flooding.

“Maintenance officers are also visiting the block proactively to check for issues and ensure the pipes are clear.”
