WE VISITED the Barry institution which is revamped and ready to go under new owners.
There are countless memories of the Barry Bierkeller online, from photos in the 70s up until it closed in the early 80s.
One person wrote: “My husband and I got engaged there when the Eurovision Song Contest was on in 1971. We are still together 49 years later. Happy memories!”
And those memories could be made again by a new generation as Barry’s Bierkeller has been restored and is back open.
The Bierkeller opened at the end of last year and the Barry and District finally went down into the ‘time capsule’ to see what it's like now.
Owners and showmen father and son Jamie and Lewis Crole reopened the bar saying it had to happen.
The pair own Carousel Amusement Arcade next door and when they got the chance to extend Dinos Arcade they jumped at the opportunity to “unseal” Barry’s Bierkeller.

Inside were the old pillars and wood benches, the original bar with the original beer barrels set in the walls, and it’s all been kept, while adding a few modern twists to give the punters even more entertainment.
The bierkeller is a live music venue as well as having a state-of-the-art darts board, disco lights for when people want to party, a large screen showing high-definition sport (including, yes, the Six Nations!) and there’ll be a pool table coming in.
But the bierkeller is as much about the past as it is the future.
Mr Crole Snr said he has been inundated with people coming to the bar, having a drink and reminiscing of the times of old.

Mr Crole Snr said the history of the bierkeller went back so far he didn’t even remember it himself.
He described how he and his team “plodded” along with the reconstruction not wanting to rush, to do it right, and partly because of the value of some of the features he had on his hands.
When we stood at the bar as bar manager Leyla Cuschieri poured a stein of beer, Mr Crole Snr pointed up at the lanterns hanging from the ceiling and the fireplaces and said “these are worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. We didn’t want to replace anything.”
Did I mention beer? The bierkeller sticks true to its name offering the famous German stein (two pint glasses) for £9.

Ms Cuschieri said it’s a privilege to be behind the bar and have the opportunity to hear some of the stories of the past.
“Even if they just come down for a look, the stories about people who were here and they are still together, and they have great great-great-grandchildren now, it’s great.”
What do you remember of the bierkeller of old? Did you have your first drink there, meet the love of your life there, have the best nights out there?? Have you been to the now bierkeller?
