THE Barry Fireworks Fiesta is in jeopardy after organisers said there were no confirmed plans to host the massively popular event for 2023.

The Barry Island Fireworks Fiesta is a mainstay on the calendar of events in Barry raising crucial funds for charities such as Age Connects.

However, organisers say no dates have been set for this year after lack of engagement with other organisations.

Right now, the fireworks extravaganza seems to be going down the same route as Cadoxton music festival, when organisers revealed they couldn’t put on the event in July because of spiralling costs.

That story ended in good news with Cadoxton going ahead after a last-ditch funding boost from Vale Council, but will the fireworks fiesta go ahead, or will it fall by the wayside?

When one member of the public asked on Facebook, “Are you doing a display this year?” they would never have expected such a lukewarm response.

The new organisers, with their maiden show taking place last year, said no dates are set.

The organisers then went on to cryptically say “some groups have not engaged” with them.

The news comes after they aimed to put the fireworks display back on, at the usual date – after putting the event on earlier than usual in 2022 due to the availability of the fireworks display team.

The organisers said on Facebook: “At present there are no confirmed plans for the 2023 fireworks event.

“As with previous firework events, it is planned by multiple groups however, despite a number of attempts, some groups have not engaged in the organisation of the fireworks this year.”

This provoked an outcry on social media, with people saying they were “gutted” to hear the news.

One wrote: “Such a shame. It's been our family tradition for many years.”

Another said: “Fingers crossed. It’s always such a fab event!”

While another confirmed they come all the way from Cwmbran for the event and were disappointed to hear the news.

“We come every year since my children were little. Will be sad not going. We come down from Cwmbran.”

The organisers went on to say they will endeavour to try put on a show.

“Attempts are ongoing and should any plans be confirmed we will update our Social Media accounts so everyone is made aware what is happening.

“We hope to be able to come together with other groups to bring the event back to Barry Island in 2024.”
