A PUBLIC meeting is due to go ahead on Monday as Vale Council look to up the pressure on housing firms which it believes are not meeting community obligations.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council want to hear from residents who have dealt with the Waterfront Consortium which it believes is not meeting obligations to build roads, community areas and maintain parks as it relentlessly continues to build houses in the area.
At the beginning of August, council leader Lis Burnett launched a furious criticism on housing firms developing the Waterfront area, saying the firms were not meeting their obligations to build community infrastructure.
Issues raised included little progress made on green spaces, parks and footpaths which are still not finished, while the council say roads remain in a partially-completed state.
The Waterfront Consortium, consisting of Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Homes, responded by reassuring residents of the consortium’s commitment to deliver these facilities as quickly as possible.
The meeting, at the Pumphouse on Monday evening, will begin at 4.30pm with residents of Barry welcome to walk in and speak to council officials about their experiences with the consortium.
Then, councillor Burnett and chief executive Rob Thomas will hold a small presentation updating the public on the council’s plans to put their foot down on the consortium while hosting a Q and A session.
Cllr Burnett has previously threatened the council will do everything in its power to make sure the housing firms meet their obligations.
At the beginning of August, Cllr Burnett, said: “There has been a catalogue of broken promises and weak excuses for the lack of progress, yet, remarkably, these issues do not seem to be affecting the developers’ house-building programme.
“The only conclusion is that the Waterfront Consortium does not care about community.
"It builds houses not homes, is interested in profit not people, and creates properties not vibrant, attractive places to live.”
On the meeting, Cllr Burnett said she looks forward to hearing the thoughts of the people of Barry.
“I’m committed to engaging with residents to learn about their experiences.”
“As a council, we will do everything in our power to hold developers to account and make sure they honour their commitments.”
The meeting will be held at Academy Expresso Bar, the Pumphouse, September 18, 4.30pm to 6pm.
