WORK to improve The Grange Park and Wenvoe recreation ground started this week and could take up to five weeks to complete.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council began construction on Monday, September 4, following consultations with the public to add new outdoor facilities.
Following two consultations with the public last year, on March 3, 2022, and October 12, 2022, the council agreed that the site should include outdoor gym facilities.
A spokesperson for the Vale of the Glamorgan Council said: “Works to improve the Grange/Wenvoe Recreation Ground began on the 4th of September 2023.
"The new ground is expected to take a total of five weeks to be completed and has a provisional finish date in mid-October, weather depending.”
The equipment will be designed to be inclusive for adults, including several specially adapted apparatus for disabled users.
The new site will have over 25 different exercise stations, including a two-wheel spinners, callisthenics fitness zone, double leg press, sit-up bench, inclusive hand bike, chest press and pull down and an inclusive chest press and pull-down along with a spacewalker, cycle bike, inclusive hand bike and more.
The site will have the capacity for up to 20 people, with work expected to be completed in October.
Cabinet member for neighbourhood and building services, Cllr Mark Wilson, said: “This is a wonderful space that will profit the wider community.
“Outdoor gyms have a range of benefits for our physical and mental health and are a budget-friendly way to stay fit.
“Developer contributions enable the Vale of Glamorgan Council to deliver new and improved community facilities and enhance the local infrastructure where needed.”
The new outdoor gym has been funded by section 106 money, which is made available and allocated in a democratic manner to upgrade areas of the Vale including recreational and gym facilities.
