VALE council is holding a public meeting as it steps up its pressure on housing firms in Barry.

At the beginning of August, Council leader Lis Burnett launched a furious criticism on housing firms developing the Waterfront area, saying the firms were not meeting their obligations to build community infrastructure as they continued to ramp up hundreds of houses and flats.

Issues raised by the council include very little progress made on elements of the scheme, including green spaces, parks and footpaths which are still not finished, while the council say roads remain in a partially-completed state.

A spokesperson for the Waterfront consortium, consisting of Persimmon Homes, Taylor Wimpey and Barratt Homes, hit back at this, reassuring residents of the consortium’s commitment to deliver these facilities as quickly as possible.

However, this didn’t cut it with Councillor Burnett, who threatened the council will do everything in its power to make sure the housing firms meet their “obligations”.

“The consortium is not only in breach of its legal obligations,” said Cllr Burnett, “it's also in breach of local and national government polices around placemaking.

“As a council, we will do everything in our power to hold developers to account and make sure they honour their commitments.”

Now, the council say they wish to work with the community to increase pressure on developers to deliver all elements in their agreement.

The purpose of the meeting is to learn from Barry Waterfront residents about their experiences of living on the development and their dealings with the consortium.

The council say the meeting will be open to all and is an opportunity for residents to learn about the latest action the council has taken in addition to sharing their experiences with senior officers.

On the proposed meeting, Cllr Burnett says she looks forward to meeting Barry residents.

“I’m committed to engaging with residents to learn about their experiences,” said Cllr Burnett.

“As a council we strive to build strong communities and the Consortium is failing to build anything but houses and flats that it can profit from.

“As a council, we will do everything in our power to hold developers to account and make sure they honour their commitments.”

The meeting will be held at Academy Expresso Bar, the Pumphouse, September 18, 4.30pm to 6pm.
