RESIDENTS are furious at the way landscaped gardens on new housing estates in the Vale have been left to deteriorate.

Photos show a play park with giant weeds poking through the matting, massive patches of dead grass next to pathways, and lots of dead trees…

Now a group of residents has had enough, saying they are sick of seeing the eyesore of areas fenced off waiting to be maintained. They even say residents are having to mow the lawns themselves, something they should not have to do.

Maintenance responsibilities for the estate in question are up in the air, currently being transferred from Taylor Wimpey, which completed building the estate in 2022, to a new maintenance company.

In a statement the group said: “When buying a new build property, buyers are sold the dream of a beautiful home in leafy suburbs with landscaped green open spaces, parks and play areas, and plenty of trees.

“With new build estates popping up all over the Vale, Golwg Y Mor in Rhoose is no exception.

“Unfortunately, the hope of a 'big leafy suburb' at the Golwg Y Mor has been dashed due to the lack of a maintenance and aftercare programme on the trees.”

The issue was brought to light by Justine Williams, lead member of Replant Rhoose, who said: "I was cycling through the estate when I noticed that many of the trees were either dead or dying.”

Golwg Y Mor resident, Darren Williams said the estate should be in a good condition.

“The open green spaces should be well presented, with grass, not weeds,” said Mr Williams.

“Many residents, including myself, have written to Taylor Wimpey on numerous occasions to highlight the disrepair of the three parks. For several months the roundabout and large swing was fenced off, making it an eyesore.”

Where is Golwg Y Mor?

Golwg Y Mor is an estate built in the town of Rhoose just south of Cardiff Airport and west of Barry.

The housing estate consists of almost 300 homes ranging from one bedroom to four bedrooms.

'It is an absolute mess'

Cllr Samantha Campbell, Independent councillor for Rhoose, says it’s a shame that everyone’s gardens on the estate look so nice, yet the landscaping is such a “mess”.

“It is an absolute mess,” said Cllr Campbell. “It is not acceptable and they (Taylor Wimpey) have left it totally neglected.”

Taylor Wimpey has confirmed they are currently responsible for the landscape maintenance on the development.

They say the site has not yet been handed over to a new management company, but will be soon.

A representative of Taylor Wimpey said: “We are aware of the concerns that local residents have regarding the landscaping at our Golwg y Mor development and have instructed our landscaping contractors to attend the development in order to undertake a thorough review of the landscaping, trees and other open spaces on site.

“We will address any outstanding issues as a matter of priority.”
