A RARE stop notice has been issued on a development in the Vale of Glamorgan due to fears it is disturbing birds’ nests, believed to be on land owned by Barry Leisure Park owner Henry Danter.
Mr Danter has ambitious plans to turn land on the Sully coastline into holiday accommodation to complement his famous park.
Now a further spanner has been thrown in the works, with work on the site said to be damaging birds’ nests.
Vale of Glamorgan issue 'stop notice'
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has issued a notice for all development on an area of land in Sully, believed to be Mr Danter's, to stop after receiving evidence it may have led to the destruction of birds’ nests.
The council did not specify the area but the Barry and District News understands it is Mr Danter's property.
It comes as the council says a satisfactory planning application for the work in question is yet to be received, but preparatory work to change ground levels still appears to have already taken place.
Officers issued the stop notice today, March 31, and informed Natural Resources Wales and the Police Wildlife and Environment Crime Officer.
The stop notice means all development must cease until the developer gains consent for any intended works.
The council say accompanying documentation was not supplied with the invalid application that has been received – paperwork is still necessary as these plans will be classed a major development due to the site area.
The council say a statutory pre-application consultation needs to be carried out and that has not happened.
Cllr Lis Burnett, leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said the council are concerned about procedures so far.
“The council is aware of the depth of local feeling regarding this proposed development and very concerned at the lack of engagement with proper planning procedures so far,” said Cllr Burnett.
“Officers are closely monitoring this site and will not hesitate to intervene again if further violations are found to have been committed.”

'It is an eyesore and we want to make it something special for Wales'
Mr Danter planned to build holiday accommodation on a 20-acre site in Sully which the Barry Island Leisure park owner predicted thousands would use, bringing much-needed money and jobs to the southern coast of Wales.
This stop notice puts Mr Danter’s plans on hold.

Today, March 31, Mr Danter confirmed with the Barry and District News that he employed a qualified tree surgeon on the site. He went on to say they would not have done the work if birds’ nests had been in danger.
“There are very few birds’ nests because the seagulls eat the birds,” explained Mr Danter. “This is something they (the council) want to have another look at. If they had mentioned it to me we would have worked with them.”
