A NEW skatepark coming to Barry has secured an additional £80,000 of funding for its new and enhanced design.
A new bespoke, freeform concrete skatepark is coming to replace the Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark at the Cold Knap in Barry.
The Vale of Glamorgan Council has been working in partnership with the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund and Sport Wales to deliver the project.
The council secured £350,000 last March through a grant from Sport Wales, - which provided £200,000 for the project - capital funding from the council, and an additional £30,000 coming from the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund.
However, the enhanced design that was produced through consultation with the local skate community and Bendcrete Leisure Ltd required an additional £80,900, which has now been secured through The National Lottery Community Fund.
Now that the final design has been agreed, Bendcrete are anticipated to begin construction on site late in April. The design will take around 14 weeks to build.
The new enhanced design
Cllr Gwyn John, cabinet member for sport, leisure and well-being said the aim is for the new design to cater for everybody.
“While we haven’t been able to incorporate all the requests made during the consultation, the new design will cater for everybody, and offers challenging transfer lines for the more advance riders,” said Cllr John.
“I’m really pleased that the council, in partnership with the Richard Taylor Memorial Fund and Sport Wales, will deliver a top-quality facility for the skate community in a well-established and popular location.”
Richard Taylor was a champion skater who died in 2004. His mum Gaynor said she can’t wait to see the finished product.
“I am thrilled that the Lottery has provided the extra funding needed for the new Richard Taylor Memorial Skatepark to proceed. I am really looking forward to Bendcrete coming on site,” she said.
“I’d like to thank Sport Wales, the Vale of Glamorgan Council, the National Lottery Community Fund, the Waterloo Foundation, the South Wales Police Youth Trust and the generosity of everyone who have made donations to make this project possible.”
