FIVE pubs from Barry and Penarth have made the cut to be featured in a special anniversary edition of the Good Beer Guide.

Three pubs from Penarth and two from Barry have been considered worthy of being included in the 2023 list.

The 2023 edition of the book marks 50 years since its inception.

Published by Camra (the Campaign for Real Ale), the guide highlights all the best watering holes throughout the country.

Here are the pubs in Barry and Penarth which have made the grade this time around.

Barry

  • Barry West End Club, St Nicholas Road – described by Camra as “an essential visit”;
  • Butterfly Collector, Holton Road – “the owner is a keen fan of The Jam and named the pub after one of their songs”.

Penarth

  • Golden Lion, Glebe Street – “serving some of the best-kept quality real ale in the area”;
  • Pilot, Queen’s Road – “long established reputation for high-quality beer”;
  • Windsor, Windsor Road – “when not lively it is quiet and the perfect place for a conversation”.

There is also a section in each region for breweries, and one from Barry has been featured.

Breweries

  • Vale of Glamorgan, Atlantic Business Park, Barry – “Now in its third generation of ownership, recently moved to a bigger site”.

Camra was founded by four real ale enthusiasts back in 1971.

"Our vision is to have quality real ale, cider and perry and thriving pubs in every community," they say on their website.

The Guide is available to pre-order through the Camra website now, with discounts available to members.
