ARMED police were called out to an incident in Barry this morning which saw three people arrested.

Today – Tuesday, July 12 – South Wales Police officers were deployed to an address in Maes-Yr-Ysgol in the Buttrills area of Barry.

This was due to a report of a man in possession of a weapon; the incident has now concluded with three arrests made.

Sergeant Gareth Handy said:

“At around 11.30am today, officers were called to reports of a man in possession of a weapon at an address on Maes-Yr-Ysgol, Barry.

"Firearms officers were deployed to the location.

"The street was cordoned off and residents were asked to remain in their homes until the incident concluded to ensure their safety."

He confirmed that:

  • A 29 year-old man from Llandeyrn was arrested for possession of a firearm and for criminal damage and was taken to hospital for treatment - at this stage his injuries are believed to have been self-inflicted.
  • Two other men, one aged 28 from Splott and the other aged 33 from Fairwater, were arrested for possession of a firearm. One is in custody and the other was taken to hospital.

"We can confirm a firearm was recovered from the address," he added.

"Local residents are thanked for their understanding throughout the incident."
