TWO Barry building projects have won awards at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards 2022.

The Welsh leg of the awards – sponsored by Sika Limited - celebrates the most impressive recent building projects.

Winning the Commercial Development Award is Goodsheds in Barry. Managed by Loft Co, Goodsheds is the first new sustainable urban high street in the UK. People are able to work, eat, live and play all in the same area and hosts a mix of independent food and drink, boutique retail and lifestyle premises as well as spaces for business.

Judges commented: “The submission presents a thoughtful, sensitive and sustainable approach towards the regeneration of an industrial heritage location within Barry Town Docs.”

The winner of the Public Sector Project is Llancarfan Primary School in Rhoose. Llancarfan Primary School is the first school in Wales designed to be net zero carbon for operational energy when in use. It is designed to bring a positive contribution to the Welsh built environment, meeting the needs of today without compromising future generations and demonstrating the use of PV with Battery Storage ‘on site.’

Judges said: “Llancarfan Primary School is a pioneering project, the first net zero carbon school in Wales. This facility not only educates the next generation but inspires pupils to understand and protect biodiversity.”

The winners from Wales will be shortlisted for the national awards which will take place in October.

Geraint Evans FRICS, chairman of the judging panel, said: “These winning projects are a true testament to the hard work of property professionals in Wales. The pandemic has led to the industry facing much uncertainty and challenging conditions, but we were delighted, and very proud, to see such innovative building projects appearing across our cities and towns.

“The teams behind them have worked tirelessly and with incredible vision to create projects which provide tremendous benefit across a diverse range of areas. Through collaborating with other professionals, local surveyors have shown that they have the talent to deliver exemplary and, in many cases, world-class built projects.”

“The RICS is elated to recognise skills and dedication that the teams behind these projects had in ensuring successful delivery and making a positive impact across Wales.”
