BARRY is marking LGBT+ history month by showcasing art, lighting up landmarks, and flying the rainbow flag.
February is LGBT+ history month, which celebrates people’s different sexualities and observes the history of the LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, plus) community including civil rights movements.
Barry Town Council is encouraging people to send art – based on this year’s theme of ‘politics in art’ - to showcase at Barry Town Hall and on their website.
The ‘politics in art’ theme references art in the national curriculum and celebrates the achievements and contributions of LGBT+ artists.
Art can be in any form – including poetry, photography, painting – and can be e-mailed to engagementandevents@barrytowncouncil.gov.uk or hand delivered to Barry Town Hall in Holton Road.
Those wanting their art returned can arrange a date and time to collect it from the town hall once LGBT+ month concludes.
Along with this Barry Town Council initiative, LGBT+ history month is being marked in Barry by Vale of Glamorgan Council.
Along with Hood Road tunnel and the Eastern and Western Shelters at Barry Island being lit up in rainbow colours, the rainbow flag is flying at the Civic Offices on Holton Road.
Leader of Vale of Glamorgan Council, Cllr Neil Moore, said: “The council is once again marking LGBT+ History Month as we do each year.
“This includes flying the rainbow flag and lighting the Hood Road tunnel and Eastern and Western Shelters at Barry Island in rainbow colours. We will also be sharing messages on our social media channels throughout the month.
“As a council, we aim to celebrate inclusivity and diversity and are committed to equality regardless of sex, ethnic origin, age, disability and sexual orientation.
“LGBT+ history month offers the perfect chance to celebrate that and further our work on equalities.
“I am particularly proud, too, of the work of GLAM, our staff network of LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies that works to have a positive impact for LGBTQ+ colleagues in the workplace.
"This is achieved by raising awareness and visibility while providing a social and supportive working environment.”
