PARTS of a Barry canal will be closed for up to six weeks while “much-needed” work is carried out.
Vale of Glamorgan Council is carrying out work to Knap Gardens canal as part of a green infrastructure programme.
Sections of the canal will be closed for five or six weeks while work is undertaken to improve biodiversity, clean up the area, and carry out repairs.
The area outlined in red will be fenced off while work, which began on January 4, is carried out.
The work being undertaken includes:
- Planting 14 new trees around the canal;
- Installing bat and bird boxes in the area;
- Planting 4,000 daffodil bulbs which should bloom in spring;
- Cleaning feeders and damns on the canal;
- Carring out repairs to concrete sections of the feeder and lower ‘venetian bridge’ and wall;
- Installing replica ornate railing along the feeder stream nearest to the halfway bridge;
- Planting of the feeders adjacent to the new railing with aquatic plants to encourage biodiversity.
Knap Gardens is a Green Flag Park; Green Flag status is given to well managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces.
In Barry Porthkerry Country Park also has Green Flag status along with Barry Island Seafront, Central Park, Friars Point, Gladstone Gardens, Romilly Park, and Victoria Park.
Vale of Glamorgan Council has apologised for any inconvenience the work on the canal at Knap Gardens may cause and asked that people “please bear with us while the team carries out these much-needed restorations.”
