A NEW art exhibition showcasing Welsh artists’ work will be displayed in Barry.

The Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Art Central Gallery in Barry  is exhibiting work from The Welsh Group/Y Grwp Cymreig throughout autumn and winter

One of the most established artist groups in Wales, The Welsh Group is an artist collective that has been giving a voice to the visual arts in Wales for more than 70 years.

They currently have around 40 active artist members – including painters and sculptors - whose work demonstrates a cross section of approaches in contemporary visual arts practice through a wide range of media and processes.

Numerous artists involved in the group are Vale of Glamorgan residents, including:

  • Alan Salisbury
  • Professor Gerda Roper
  • Kay Keogh
  • Ivor Davies
  • Mary Husted
  • Shirley Anne Owen
  • Angela Kingston.

The Welsh Group chair, Sue Hiley Harris, said: “The group are very pleased to exhibit at Art Central Gallery in Barry.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for each member to show a selection of their works in such a fabulous space.”

They group has exhibited widely both in Wales and internationally.

Their recent 70th anniversary celebration was marked with a publication by David Moore exploring the works of the current artists and highlighting the group’s history.

Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for Leisure, Arts and Culture, Cllr Kathryn McCaffer, said: “We are delighted to be hosting The Welsh Group/Y Grwp Cymreig artists, particularly as many are resident in Wales and some in the Vale of Glamorgan.

“It is an excellent opportunity for schools, residents and visitors to see some of the incredible work created by these artists right on their doorstep.”

The exhibition will open on Saturday, October 9 and run until Saturday, January 8.

Gallery opening times are 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 9.30am to 3.30pm on Saturdays.
